Carne asada and the california connection.
I have been to alot of states in this country and eaten my share of local cuisine, however, in southern California there are places that make the grandest food of all foods. I am refferring to the carne asada burrito. Usually a pound of meat, some guacamole, a bit of onion and some tomato wrapped lovingly in a flour tortillia, these caloric wonders of the pacific southwest have become not just my love but my lust, my need, my reason to be. I find myself thinking of them, often in the evening, when the bar is about to close and all the sad and lonely people are making there last desprate attempts to find love, if but only for the night.I never fret, however, for I know who I am going to bed with... a belly full of savory, unidentified meat wrap. If you have never been to southern california, you have never had a carne asada burrito! That is the curse and blessing of the carne, as I said I've been to alot of places and eaten alot of burritos that bare the label "carne asada" and none of them come close, not one iota, near a southern California carne asada. When I say southern California, I mean SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, once you get north of the Orange County line or if you venture east, past Poway, you can forget finding anything even close and believe me, I've tried. New York has pastrami that is worth the stab wound, Chicago has pizza that is worth fighting the cold, Philly has cheese steaks that make you proud of your heart disease and Louisiana creole will make you smile while your sphincter burns but southern California has carne asada. There are many reasons I can see to visit or live in California, the sun, the surf, the summertime girls with there perky ripe melon breasts, but for me only one reason is needed, one lovingly wrapped reason. You can have the perfect weather and the beautiful people, just leave me my carne asada burrito.
